about Collation No: 5-3-1

Dominic Lash is a freely improvising double bassist and electric guitarist who the Free Jazz Collective has called an “exceptional creative musician”. He also both writes and performs composed music and, as an academic, researches and writes about film.

He plays or has played with musicians such as John Butcher, Joe Morris, Evan Parker, Pat Thomas, and Nate Wooley, and performed with the late Tony Conrad, Steve Reid, and John Russell.
His main projects include The Dominic Lash Quartet; among his most regular collaborators are Angharad Davies, Matthew Grigg, Tim Hill, Josh Sinton, and Alex Ward.

Solo double bass pieces have been written for him by composers including Jürg Frey, Richard Glover, and Éliane Radigue.

He has also performed with ensembles including Apartment House, the Bozzini Quartet, and Parkinson Saunders.

Festival appearances include Akbank Jazz Festival (Istanbul), All Ears (Oslo), Amplify 2011: stones (New York), Audiograft (Oxford), Freedom of the City (London), Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Hurta Cordel (Madrid), Konfrontationen (Nickelsdorf), LMC Festival (London), Manchester Jazz Festival, Ruhr Jazz Festival, Suoni per il Popolo (Montreal) and Tampere Jazz Happening.

His work has been broadcast on a number of radio stations, including BBC Radios 1 and 3 and Germany’s SWR2, and released on labels including Another Timbre, b-boim, Bead, Cathnor, Clean Feed, Compost and Height, Confront, Discus, Emanem, Erstwhile, FMR, Foghorn, Iluso, Intonema, Leo, Mikroton, NoBusiness, Otoroku, Takuroku, and Tresor.

In 2015 he started a digital label for some of his more uncategorisable work, called Spoonhunt. Its first three CDs were released in 2021.

A bit of history: in the early 2000’s Dominic Lash, Pat Thomas and Malcolm Atkins revived the ‘Oxford Improvisers’ Cooperative’ which had been active in the 1980’s. Centered around Monday evening open sessions at Brookes University ever since, ‘Oxford Improvisers’ has been a space of experimentation, wonderment and discovery for the past 20 years.
It is with great pleasure that we welcome Dom to play with us.
