Preston Jigsaw - A presentation and demonstration as an introduction to freely improvised music 03.02.2020

Jigsaw Workshops: Preston, the nature and practice of free improvisation in music - SPECIAL SESSION.

 

This is an open & public workshop/performance session exploring the nature and practice of free improvisation in music through a mixture of; the playing of the music, discussion, and simple workshop exercises.

This is a special event, it has a different start time, session content, and has the addional attendance of up to a dozen MA students who are students at UCLan.

All levels of ability and experience are welcome.
You can attend this event and not partcipate in the playing but observe and participate in the discussion,
No need to book just turn up

The format for this special session is:

  • 18.00 hours arrive in the room

  • 18.10 - 18.55 Phil Morton (biography) will provide an introduction to free improvisation in music and

    • Topics may include

      • Definition and where did it come from

      • Why do people play freely improvised music

      • Can it be described and broken down into its parts: lets take a look

      • Prepared instruments and extended techniques

  • 19.05 - 19.20 Opportunity to view instruments and set ups employed by improvisers, plus some chat.

  • 19.20 - 20.30 Small group playing of a music that is `freely improvised` with some time for discussion and reflection.

  • 20.30 - 21.00 A summing up, a look at resouces and support for this practice.

  • The above having been said, the session may be changed to reflect the social and musical dynamic of those present on the night.

 

Please arrive and be ready to start at 6.00 pm - the session starts at 6.10 pm
If attending for the first time, it is good advice to let Phil Morton know, and we can arrange to meet at the entrance, this helps.
