Phil Morton writes: as the Centrifuge project reaches its 10th anniversary it is a great personal pleasure to present this impressive extended line up for the festival at the Capstone and to this workshop. The Centrifuge project draws on a large and shifting pool of improvising musicians, and the ensemble for this workshop/development day is a rich list of experienced and important artists active in the British improvised and creative music sector.
The aim is to:
- To develop a literacy that enables the verbal articulation and sharing of ideas.
- To develop the music; particular sensibilities or values may become more apparent through the combination of playing and discussion. This may help us negotiate improvisations with further sensitivity and awareness, even if a unified ‘aesthetic’ does not emerge (although this might happen too!).
The music, the genre is: free improvisation, a music that
- Creates its own form as it happens (Evan Parker)
- Non-idiomatic improvising (Derek Bailey)

The ideas explored may include
- Extended instrumental techniques,
- A sense of time and place
- Timbral, timbral matching
- Attentive listening
- The experience of time, playing with time or outside of it.
- Spatial awareness, from minimalism to density, and intensity
- Group dynamics, exploring the creative dynamic of the artists present.
- Where to start, how it ends.
- The shared ambition to take the music to undiscovered places.
The participants will
- Listen and give witness to pieces of free improvised music performed by a small ensemble.
- The artist will share their experiences and thoughts about the music they just performed.
- The workshop participants will enter into a dialogue and engage with the artist on the content; of the music presented and the reflections and thoughts of the artists who performed.
- This is a focused and at times intense process as we try to develop a literacy that enables the verbal articulation and sharing of ideas in a practice that is unpredictable.
