About

Names out of the hat

The Noise Upstairs is an improv collective which runs a free-improv night in Manchester. The basic premise is that anyone can turn up and join in by putting their name in the hat. Names are pulled out, ensembles formed, and hearts broken. Plus their is a featured act

The Featured Act

The Dissonance Collective is a group of musicians and artists creating free improvised objects. Formed in January 2019 The Dissonance Collective is a group of musicians and artists creating free improvised objects.

People often talk about projects, TDC create objects. Projects are worked on and planned whereas each

TDC release represents a chunk of time (or time/space to be Einsteinian about it) which exists with or without our input. They choose to fill a designated moment with unplanned sound, as an object.

The members of The Dissonance Collective can include are Charlie Wells, Dave Parker, Matt Wells, Robert Kentell, Susie Jones and Martha Thompson.

“The Dissonance Collective fulfil their aim to take traditional music to a uniquely open-ended place” The Wire TDC’s Object 8 – Marrowbones was described by The Wire as “bewitching” and “enchantingly fragmentary“.

About NUS

The cornerstone of The Noise Upstairs has always been its monthly held improv nights. During these events the audience is invited to participate as performers. By pulling names randomly (literally out of a hat) trios are formed and are given the stage to explore and exhaust their impromptu work. This encourages an open dialogue among musicians and artists, building dynamics that may not have formed organically otherwise. Currently, these nights are run

MANCHESTER at Fuel Cafe on the second Thursday of every month, from 8:30pm to 11:00pm
Venue: Fuel Cafe Bar, 448 Wilmslow Rd, Manchester M20 3BW
