for a concert with multi-percussion player Charlie Collins, prior to her October appearances at Café Oto and Newcastle Jazz and Improvisation Festival. She employs diverse sound sources (built around multiple and dissected toy pianos) and subtle processing – alluring, drifting, almost psychedelic at times – in combination with Collins' other worldly waterphone and metal. Arresting sonic colour and a deep rhythmic sensitivity.
PAK YAN LAU, born in Belgium, with origins in Hong Kong, is considered part of the new Brussels underground. Her music spans different horizons, with improvisation and sound as its main focus - making the extraordinary out of the ordinary and creating little sound mosaics in a minimal, poetic way. Exploring a vast spectrum of sonic possibilities.
After piano studies in Belgium and Portugal, her musical interests made a shift towards free improvisation and sound/noise related music. Her love for curious sounding objects, her obsession for toys, and her fetish for toy pianos makes it into her current work: a solo project (for prepared piano/synths/toy pianos), her groove/trance project ‘Going’, and her minimal trio ‘lauroshilau’. She has made music for dance theatre, shadow theatre, photographs, and documentary, and toured extensively in Europe, Japan, and Taiwan.
CHARLIE COLLINS is a creative percussionist, free polyrhythmic drummer, and sound artist, based in the UK. His work continues to explore the boundaries between pure sound and rhythm, frequently incorporating metal percussion and free improvisation. Early recordings for cult labels Industrial, Fetish, and Doublevision were soon followed by collaborations with many of the pioneers of free improvisation, while his interest in East Asian percussion and rhythm technique is displayed in current work with komungo player Eun-Jung Kim, pianist Yoko Miura, visual artist Bongsu Park, composer Ryoko Akama, and Butoh dancers Tsukasa Kamidate and Mushimaru Fujieda. He is one of a handful of musicians to have played both Derek Bailey’s Company Week and Top Of The Pops.
