DOUGLAS BENFORD
Douglas Benford, composer and sound artist, has been involved in various audio genres and monikers since the late 1980s, performing at institutions in the UK (Bristol’s Arnolfini, London’s Science Museum, Tate Modern, The Roundhouse, ICA and Glasgow’s CCA), festivals worldwide (Mutek, Synch, Transmediale) and has had installation work in numerous UK galleries (London, Swansea, Stroud and Essex). His pieces and performances have been aired on the radio internationally, and regularly on BBC Radio 3’s Freeness programme and the Ambrosia Rasputin show on Resonance FM. After numerous electronica releases and activity in the 90s and 2000s, he now plays using acoustic sources (eg harmonium, toys, objects) with the London Improvisers Orchestra and Confront Recordings / Mark Wastell’s The Seen collective, as well as being a regular contributor to the Lonely Impulse Collective. His collaborators include Alan Wilkinson, Dominic Lash, Blanca Regina, poet Tamar Yoseloff, artist Calum Storrie, Angharad Davies, sculptor Rob Olins, Matt Atkins, Lina Lapelyte, Marjolaine Charbin, Sylvia Hallett, Steve Beresford, Hannah Marshall, Adam Bohman, John Edwards, Jennifer Allum, and Sue Lynch.

CLIVE BELL
Clive Bell is a musician, composer and writer with a specialist interest in the shakuhachi, khene (Thai mouth organ) and other East Asian wind instruments. He has travelled extensively in Japan (where he studied shakuhachi with the master Kohachiro Miyata), Thailand, Laos and Bali, researching music and meeting local practitioners. He currently tours with UK-based Japanese drumming group Taiko Meantime, and joins koto and shamisen players to perform the Japanese classical repertoire. He toured for over a decade with Jah Wobble, including shows at Ronnie Scott’s and the Glastonbury Festival. Clive is the shakuhachi player on Karl Jenkins’s album Requiem on EMI Classics, the final two Harry Potter movies, and the Hobbit. His shakuhachi playing has been featured live on Radio 3’s Late Junction and In Tune. In 2013 at the BFI, Sylvia Hallett and Clive Bell performed a live soundtrack for Walk Cheerfully, Yasujiro Ozu’s 1930 comedy gangster movie. Clive Bell has a substantial recording history as both a solo artist (his solo album, Shakuhachi: The Japanese Flute was reissued in 2005 by ARC Records) and as a composer for film, TV and theatrical productions (Complicite, Kazuko Hohki, IOU, Whalley Range Allstars). Jazz pianist Taeko Kunishima, Jaki Liebezeit, David Sylvian, David Toop, Jochen Irmler of Faust and Bill Laswell number among Clive Bell’s collaborators. Based in London, he writes regularly for the music monthly The Wire.

About KONSZTRUKTING SOUNDZ
Lev

My name’s Levente Dudas. I am the founder and creative director of N|O|E|W|A Creative Music. Since 2019, N|O|E|W|A has been my journey through sonic landscapes and free-form electroacoustic music. As both a concert-goer and performer, I’ve always been drawn to experimental and freely improvised music, though I also enjoy jazz, rock, and folk.

In 2023, after performing in various venues in and outside London, I envisioned creating a music series outside the city. This vision became Konsztrukting Soundz, a series that unites musicians and sound artists from experimental electronic and electroacoustic genres. The artists push the boundaries of sonic possibilities through free improvisation and sonic experiments…
My Artistic Vision

Crafting the perfect blend of instruments and sounds is an art in itself, demanding the same creative essence required for selecting the right chords, composing a beautiful melody, or penning engaging lyrics. Throughout history, individuals have delved into the experimentation of combining instruments, a practice extending back centuries, if not millennia. Some familiar instrument pairings we recognize today have organically evolved over the course of hundreds of years, while others resulted from necessity, accident, or a spontaneous, eccentric idea.

Since the inception of my sonic journey in 2019, my primary objective has been to immerse myself in the realm of sounds, understanding their nuances and origins. With an unwavering dedication to exploration, I strive to unearth my distinctive voice—a unique sonic signature. This pursuit involves continuous experimentation, learning, and the harmonious fusion of various instruments. Additionally, I keenly observe, record, and incorporate the ambient noise and sonic textures that surround me, contributing to the rich tapestry of my sonic endeavors.
N|O|E|W|A: My Journey into Sonic Discovery

N|O|E|W|A invites one on an odyssey through sonic landscapes and free-form electroacoustic improvisations. The genesis of N|O|E|W|A traces back to my immersion in curating and championing contemporary free-form jazz and improvised music in Szekesfehervar, a town nestled approximately 45 km (30 miles) southwest of Budapest, Hungary, during the period of 2008–2009. Initially driven by aspirations of success as a music promoter, my journey eventually led me to the realms of sound art, sonic exploration, and the creation of experimental electroacoustic music.
Konsztrukting Soundz: A Journey of Sonic Exploration

Konsztrukting Soundz has been a constant companion throughout my musical journey. From curating avant-free jazz series in Hungary back in 2008-2009, to embarking on a venture into sound design and synthesis in 2019, and finally taking the stage as a performer in 2023, Konsztrukting Soundz has always been there, waiting for its time to emerge. Now, in 2024 and beyond, I am committed to bringing Konsztrukting Soundz to life, dedicating myself to its realization and growth.

Located within the enchanting confines of the Fishermen’s Chapel, a quaint Methodist church nestled in Old Leigh (Leigh-on-Sea), Konsztrukting Soundz aims to be a beacon for established and emerging musicians, sound artists and improvisers alike. The mission is to foster collaboration among musicians and with independent record labels, venues, and cutting-edge tech organizations, offering a platform for individuals from all walks of life to immerse themselves in the realm of experimental sonic exploration. With its acoustically unique space, Konsztrukting Soundz promises to be a haven for unorthodox creative expression.
The Vision: A Symphony of Innovation

At the heart of the Konsztrukting Soundz series lies a vision to unite musicians and sound artists hailing from electronic and electroacoustic genres. Whether reveling in solo performances or collective improvisations, Konsztrukting Soundz artists share a passion for pushing the boundaries of sonic possibility. Free improvisation serves as the cornerstone of our ethos, allowing for spontaneous creativity to flourish. With regular concerts scheduled each month, typically on Saturdays, Konsztrukting Soundz provides a stage for sonic exploration, with the exception of a summer hiatus in July and August.
