System 5050 The trio and the ensemble sound mass

Written by

Introduction

System 50:50 and the ensemble sound mass.

Phil Morton's observations and speculations from research work with system 5050 using the `trio`

The trio played short pieces 4-6 minutes long, which will produce a musical experience whose soundings could be described as `thin`

The trio also used two ratio settings on the manual chess clocks, 50:50 and 33:66 - refer to the video for details.

The observations and speculations from his listening body are

  1. The density index exposes two different ways of playing, the placement of sound that is of itself and the collaborations of people and sounds that create a narrative in a timeline (temporal?)
  2. The density index offers a simple and structural method to take a group of players and move through the different densities and experience different [help me out here?] sonic relationships and characteristics.
  3. This is can be used with a group of any size but Mr. Morton speculates this is a very significant and helpful tool for improvisers who are interested an `orchestral sound` experienced when the musicians' count is large, PM speculates over 8 - nay more than 12.
  4. The sample count is small - one session.
  5. These findings are linked to Mr. Morton's hypothesis, that `System 5050` works differently in different settings, so its dynamic, has depth. System 5050 is not singular or flat.
  6. He commends these finding to the house.
