Like dust blown accross the skin

Andrew and Melissa write,

we would like to invite you to a sharing of a new work-in-progress in a beautiful little church located in Gwytherin, North Wales.

Continuing research from our previous residency at Capel y Graig in August 2018, Anoikis' residency/sharing at the Gwenfrewi Project will take the form of a series of exploratory butoh dance/electroacoustic improvisations in response to the former St. Winifred's church itself and other, specific themes to be used as notes towards a series of workshops and performances scheduled for early 2019.

We would also like to welcome Rachel Sweeney who will present an improvised butoh investigation of the area outside the church itself.

If you would like to share this information, please feel free to forward this email to others. We hope to see you there.

Best Wishes,
Andrew and Melissa

Chris Corsano is a drummer who has been at the forefronts of free improvisation, avant-rock, and noise musics since the late 1990's. His dedication to collective improvisation has led to collaborations with all sorts of kindred spirits and appearances on over 150 records. He's worked with saxophonists like Paul Flaherty, Joe McPhee, and Evan Parker; string-aces Sir Richard Bishop, Okkyung Lee, and Jim O'Rourke; and one-of-a-kind artists like Björk, Ghédalia Tazartès, Merzbow, and Jandek. Constantly seeking to expand his sound beyond conventional notions of what drums can and can't do, Corsano attacks his kit with everything from cello strings stretched across his snare drum to contact microphones on hi-hats to a slew of extended techniques of his own creation.

“Corsano, despite being arguably the most riotosly energetic and creative drummer in contemporary free jazz, does far more than merely bash his kit into submission. Playing loud does not mean abandoning subtlety, and Corsano’s sudden shifts of texture and dynamics are a wonder to behold” - The Wire

Sound affects us all. Music alters moods, intonation changes inclination, but why?
Drawing on the latest research and technological advancements in psychoacoustics, this workshop invites you to explore the relationship between sound, acoustics and wellbeing. Lend us your ears and decipher the psychological and physiological responses we have to everything from music to noise pollution.

Part of The Power of Placebo – a national programme of events to accompany our new performance, Placebo.

Led by John Drever:
Operating at the intersection of acoustics, sound art and soundscape studies, Drever’s practice represents an ongoing inquiry into the affect, perception, design and practice of everyday environmental sound. Drever is Professor of Acoustic Ecology and Sound Art at Goldsmiths, University of London, where he leads the Unit for Sound Practice Research. He is an Academician of The Academy of Urbanism and a Member of the Institute of Acoustics. In the summer of 2017 he was a Guest Professor in The Department of Digital Design and Information Studies, Aarhus University, Denmark.

Presented in association with Manchester Science Festival 2018.
