Our guests from around Europe, North America and Australia include all 10 members of the legendary Dutch pioneering ensemble: Instant Composers Pool. Some of the great pioneers of free improvisation – Han Bennink, Wolter Wierbos and Ab Baars – join us as they celebrate their 50th anniversary year.

Looking to home based talent we will have a special evening dedicated to a new collaboration with Ceol’s Craic, the innovative contemporary Gaelic music project. Renowned Gaelic singer and leading authority on pibroch Margaret Stewart will present Gaelic songs relating to the music of the great Highland bagpipe. Guests including Alasdair Whyte, Ross Whyte, Ailie Robertson and Calabrian saxophone & bagpipe player Christian Ferlaino will use these songs as a springboard for improvisation and collaboration with GIO.

Also performing new work will be Australian Art Orchestra‘s Peter Knight and extraordinary musician Aviva Endean, the result of an artist-in-residence Scotland/Australia musician transfer project with GIO.

Our international guest roster this year also includes Instant Places from Canada who will host a special interactive session with music and visuals.

The amazing Lori Freedman, also from Canada, will join us, along with Swiss concert pianist and improviser Raphael Sudan.

For those wanting to participate, we will have special guests hosting open sessions including Norwegian vocalist Guro Gravem Johansen who will lead our community and our children’s workshop sessions. Concurrent will also be hosting an Open Discussion around improvising across disciplines.

We are also delighted to welcome back some of our most influential collaborators, Kim Macari-Stone, Corey Mwamba and the ever inspirational Maggie Nicols.

Finally at GIOfest 2018 we will launch our new CD : Parallel Moments Unbroken, a new large scale work which features the ensemble with special guests including Evan Parker and Marilyn Crispell.

Come and join us as we look forward to the next decade of our international festivals, a new local and international concert series and an ever-growing international GIOfest community.

GIOfest XI is kindly supported by Creative Scotland and Centre for Contemporary Arts.
