Sonic Gaze - Central to Sandhill

This session has Central Station as the starting point.

The three sites to be listened to are Liverpool Central station ( arcade and underground platforms), Sandhill Station and the journey connecting the two. These offer a mix of human-made and natural sound. There is a mix of size of spaces, from the covered arcade/foyer of Central Station, the underground platform, the enclosed journey, to the overground open air platform at Sandhill Station overlooking, over-listening the soundscape and seascape of the River Mersey

A classic route

These offer a mix of human-made and natural sound. There is a mix of size of spaces, from the open platform to the connecting tunnel, the waiting room and the interior of the Lime Street Station.

This is the second of two, very short, train trips, named by Mr. Morton as ‘station to station’.

Meet Saturday 14th July 11.00 am - £2.00
Meeting point. The ATM, Sainsbury supermarket, Liverpool Central Station entrance and arcade.
Duration  1-1.5 hours

A soundwalkis a practice: it is walking without talking, focusing on the sound around, focusing on the present moment. In a `Sonic Gaze` session, the participants are static, though the sounds could be mobile. Talking might come later.

Sonic Gaze will be of interest to;

  • Musicians (as it involves listening to a sequence of sounds)
  • To recording artists (as one needs to appreciate the relationship between background and foreground sound, for example)
  • For electronic musicians (as it relates to the way timbres interact)
  • To planners and architects (as the sound is part of the atmosphere of a place and affects social responses).
  • Sound artist - (as an act of attentive listening as part of a preparatory methodology)
  • Everyone and anyone, (as an act of `ear cleaning`, a space of time to slow down and focus on the reality of sound in the present, to reset, refresh and re-engage)
