Barry Truax has, according to Borgo (1999), “described three general modes of engaging with the acoustic soundscape: listening-in-search, listening-in-readiness, and background listening”. 5 (pp. 79–80)

Background listening
“occurs continuously when we are not listening for a particular sound . . . where the listener is actively engaged in some other activity”. (p. 80)

Mr Morton writes: This `feels like` a polite way of saying, you are not listening to me, with the personal judgement and hint of disparagement removed, and thus is to be welcomed.
