Coates/Lines/Gauden

Bruce Coates is a saxophonist who has performed and recorded with some of the world’s top improvisers including Paul Dunmall, John Edwards, Lol Coxhill and Mark Sanders. He regularly collaborates with Walt Shaw in a variety of settings. He is also a member of SLIE (the South Leicestershire Improvisers Ensemble) with Lee Allatson, Virginia Anderson, Christopher Hobbs, Trevor Lines, Rick Nance and Peter Wyeth. Bruce and Trevor have been working together in a variety of settings for the past 30 years.

Trevor Lines
After an early background in folk and experimental rock bands I took up double-bass in my 30s concentrating on jazz and improvised music with regular involvement in folk and world music and cross-arts collaborations. I was a co-founder of Birmingham Musicians Co-operative and Fizzle, both promoting free improvisation. I composed and performed the soundtracks for the Channel 4 occasional series ‘A Private View’, and was nominated for a 2018 BBC Folk Award for the Chris Foster album ‘Hadelin’. I studied at both Guildhall School of Music and Birmingham Conservatoire, where I am now a visiting lecturer. I’m currently working regularly in a number of line-ups including a sextet with Bruce Coates & Mark Sanders exploring the music of Paul Dunmall and the Ogun label, an improvising string trio with Sarah Farmer & Richard Scott, and my own quintet So You Say featuring Jim Bashford & Alicia Gardener-Trejo

Ed Gauden Drums, already has 4 albums out with different line-ups, studied at Birmingham Conservatoire & aged 19 played Cheltenham Jazz Festival with Bobby Previt, a Bitches Brew project alongside Barry Edwards & Colin Somervell on the same bill as Herbie Hancock. Because of his love for all genres it lead him to play The Green man & T in The Park Festivals with folk pop singer songwriter Jake flowers for BBC Introducing & was an early Sunshine Underground member
